She’s a little bit country, and apparently a little bit rock and roll! Congratulations to Dolly Parton for being voted in as one of the 2022 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The organization said of the 2022 class: “It’s a diverse group of extremely talented individuals and bands who have had a significant impact and influence on rock & roll, the music that connects us all.”

Even Dolly couldn’t keep herself from receiving the honor. She released a statement on her Instagram account writing: “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.” The Hall of Fame explained that the voting had already begun and if she was a top vote-getter, Dolly would still receive the honor. In an interview with NPR last week, Dolly stated “I’ll accept gracefully. I would just say thanks and I’ll accept it because the fans vote. But when I said that, it was always my belief that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music, and I have found out lately that it’s not necessarily that.” True to her kind nature, she expressed concern about what it would mean for others though. “But if they can’t go there to be recognized, where do they go? So I just felt like I would be taking away from someone that maybe deserved it, certainly more than me, because I never considered myself a rock artist. But obviously, there’s more to it than that.”

Dolly Parton’s musical style may not be what one would describe as rock music, but there is no denying she embodies all that the genre has stood for. She has been unapologetically herself throughout her career. She rose to fame on Porter Wagner’s show but was not interested in staying in the shadows or riding anyone’s coattails. She boldly left to embark on her own career, and in the process of breaking free wrote a legendary hit, “I Will Always Love You.” Her look has been uniquely Dolly, despite what others might have thought. The artist makes political statements, all while managing to not be viewed as political. She is bold, confident, creative, and a legend. I don’t know a better description of a rock star.

Dolly Parton will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Los Angeles on November 5, 2022.
